Engineered Hardwood

..............

01.

Engineered hardwood is a type of flooring made up of multiple layers of wood veneer that are glued together in a cross-grain configuration. The top layer, also known as the wear layer, is made of real hardwood that is available in a variety of species and finishes, while the underlying layers are typically made of high-density fibre-board or plywood. This construction provides superior stability making it a great option for high-traffic areas, as well as areas prone to humidity fluctuations, such as basements. Additionally, engineered hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, just like solid hardwood, providing a long-lasting and durable flooring option for your home or office.

What makes engineered hardwood so popular, is that it still has a real wood surface, but with a multilayered compressed wood in various configurations. Most wood flooring now is pre-finished. The large majority of that is engineered as solid hardwood has become very rare. Part of the reason for this is that engineered flooring is far more stable. Your floor will experience less expansion and contraction and the milling is usually perfect, with no warping or uneven boards. An additional benefit is that far less of the tree is used to create the top visible layer than a solid piece of hardwood. For these reasons, we have decided to supply only engineered wood flooring.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

..............

02.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is a type of flooring that mimics the appearance of real hardwood but is made from synthetic materials. LVP is typically made up of multiple layers, including a wear layer on top that protects against scratches and stains, a printed design layer that gives the flooring its realistic appearance, and a core layer for stability and moisture resistance. LVP is a popular flooring choice due to its affordability, durability, and ease of maintenance.

It has become common knowledge that one of the best characteristics of vinyl plank is that it’s waterproof. For this reason, it is frequently installed in high moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms. At Origin, we love this for multiple reasons. The main reason is that we love to create a look of continuity from room to room. We do this by continuing the same floor through doorways, eliminating the need for transitions. Our customers always seem to appreciate this, especially the foot draggers. For us at Origin, the ability to create this continuous flow with bump free doorways into any room has become one of the greatest selling features of LVP.

With all the different core materials that make up the luxury vinyl plank category, LVP has become quite a broad term. Let’s do a quick rundown of the main types. First, there is glue down vinyl plank which comes in different thicknesses and sizes and is the most flexible material of the vinyl planks. This floor has some pros and cons with it that generally make it more suitable for commercial installs, however it is still often used for residential. Its main asset is that in the case of a flood, you will never have to pull up the floor as water can’t really get under it, it’s glued and forms a seal to the subfloor. However, we rarely use a glue down vinyl on residential jobs because it requires a very smooth subfloor and the levelling required to avoid imperfections telegraphing through the floor often makes it less desirable. We also don’t usually recommend a glue down vinyl for do it yourself homeowners. It requires a more refined skill set on both levelling and installing.

For these reasons the vast majority of what we sell is click vinyl plank with built in underlay. We sell various thicknesses and sizes of planks with different types of cores. The 3 main vinyl plank cores on the market right now are WPC, SPC and rigid core. Without getting into too much detail on these, generally the SPC and rigid core options are thinner and more dense that the WPC. The WPC seems to be more flexible and porous than the other two making it a more forgiving floor to work with. WPC is more likely to hide imperfections in the subfloor and will mould more easily to the existing floor. However, WPC is generally slightly more expensive than the other two as it costs more to make. At Origin we offer a wide variety of each of these types of vinyl plank and you should be able to find all the specs with core type, measurements and install methods in the floor catalogue.

Laminate

..............

03.

Laminate flooring is a synthetic flooring product designed to look like hardwood. It consists of a high-density fibre-board core that is topped with a printed design layer and a clear protective layer. The design layer is printed with a high-resolution photograph that is intended to mimic the look of real wood. The protective layer is made of clear aluminum oxide that helps to protect the flooring from scratches, stains, and fading. Laminate is a popular flooring choice due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. It is often used in high-traffic areas such as living rooms, hallways and basements. In situations where you desire a floor thicker than vinyl plank for height reasons but still desire a durable moisture resistant option, we do have a good selection of water resistant laminates.

Origin’s Custom Stairs

..............

Our stairs create the illusion of a solid tread with a white riser. It can be done a few ways and uses the same wood or vinyl plank to match the main floor. To create the solid tread illusion we make the square nose from the flooring for a seamless solid tread look.

Origin Planks

Most wood flooring now is pre finished. The large majority of that is engineered as solid hardwood has become very rare. Part of the reason for this is that engineered flooring is far more stable (less expansion and contraction) and the milling is usually perfect (no warping or uneven boards). An additional benefit is that far less of the tree is used to create the top visible layer than a solid piece of hardwood. For these reasons we have decided to supply only engineered wood flooring.

Origin has gone to great lengths to source wood collections that reflect current trends in colour, style, wood species and finishes. Almost all of our collections contain planks that are 7 ½” or wider with thicknesses between ½” and ¾”. The majority of planks are over 6’ long so end joints will always be well staggered. Due to the width of boards we use a glue assist technique to prevent movement or squeaking on nail down installs. We do offer a full spread glue install if the floor is going over radiant heat or concrete.

The Origin Collection is a group of our favourite styles and colours of engineered wood. This is based on appearance, durability and value. We have named each colour after a national park around the world. The planks range from 7 ½” wide up to 9 ½”, mainly in 6 foot lengths. The surface layer is usually white oak and 2-3mm thick with overall thickness of planks between 12-14mm. The most popular finish is a matt UV oil or lacquer coating containing aluminum oxide for a highly durable finish.

Almost every colour of this collection is stored locally in a large heated warehouse, so our turnaround time can be very quick on orders. We can usually deliver products free of charge within 48 hours of ordering. Installation can begin within 1-2 days of delivery with engineered flooring based on proper moisture readings. Almost all Origin planks are rated for over radiant heat.
